MINI-SERIES: betty draper dress

I found a crazy gorgeous (emphasis on crazy) botanical printed cotton a while ago at the market and wasn't sure what to do with it. I loved the mixture of florals and obnoxious colours and it was very me so i bought it anyway. After pondering for weeks over what was worthy of this perfect print I looked to the reliable Mad Men cast for inspiration. I knew immediately when I saw this Betty Draper pink dress that I needed it to be a pencil dress.

I used the bodice from Simplicity 6123 view B which I had in my stash, incidentally my Joan dress was the same pattern but view A. The skirt was self drafted as I had already made a custom pencil skirt block that fit me better than the simplicity 6123 one. I lined the dress with a seafoam polyester lining, to go with the accent seafoam in the botanical print. I cut a size 10 in the bodice since for my Joan dress I had gone by my measurements (rookie mistake with the big four) and cut a 14 which was wayyy too roomy. I love how fitted this style is and it just feels really fun to wear.

I machine stitched the zipper to the lining as I wanted to get it done in time for the project sewn signature style challenge  and I have to admit it doesn't bother me that it is visibly sewn from the outside. I used the lining thread at the top and the fashion thread for the bobbin and it came out swell.
